Bobby's Snacks Vol. 14: I've Got Friends With the Spirits

Happy #AudioDramaSunday Friends!

This week was another whirlwind, especially with the weather starting to fully embrace spring. On Tuesday, Adam had a last minute tape sync down here, so he ended up staying with Sam and I for a few nights. It was really nice, even though it was brief. We took advantage of the sun that night and fired up the grill at my in-laws place, and then saw a movie together the next night after a day of doctor’s appointments.

After he left, things didn’t really let up, as I ran directly from a performance of Shen Yun that we bought my father-in-law tickets to for his birthday back in February (something he has always wanted to see… his review: incredible costumes and dancing, could have done without the politics… our review: incredible costumes and dancing/wild, video-game style projections broke our brains), to Ghost Tour practice, where we worked on new songs to add into our set for our second show together in a couple of weeks. And to top that all off, Jack and I are both halfway through writing the first two scripts of Forgive Me! season 4, which is blowing my mind in all sorts of ways.

All good things, but I’m hella sleepy, so let’s hop to it:

“A Story About Him” may be my favorite episode of this series of all time, with very little exaggeration. Granted, casting Ashlie Atkinson (Steal the Stars, Mr. Robot) in anything is grounds for me paying attention, but having her play Cecil’s long-mentioned but never before introduced sister, Abbie? *chef’s kiss* In all seriousness, this was a brutal and beautiful script that explored the traumatic nature of their shared childhood, and the bitterness that comes from being the older sibling who has to care for their younger sibling in the midst of a broken marriage. Getting to hear Abbie confront Cecil about his previous treatment of Steve Carlsberg, a man who has never been anything but nice to him, was hella gratifying. But also, getting even the tiniest of hints at the more supernatural aspects of his upbringing… that still ultimately boil down to the failures of an absentee father who wreaked havoc on everyone he left behind? Gut wrenching stuff.

After the past few episodes of watching the unfurling plans of Moc Weepe, I was thrilled to get back to Lark and Phinneas. I’ve been super into their odd couple pairing, and am thrilled to see them moving the pieces on the board for what is clearing going to be an explosive ending. Love getting to see the endgame firming up, especially after the intensity of last week’s confrontation between Moc Weepe and Kozma Laszlo. We’re already over halfway through the season, and as much as I can’t wait for every new installment to drop, I am NOT looking forward to this show being over!

This week’s installment of Chronicles introduces us to a Doctor who lived through the absolute trenches of the early pandemic. It’s a rough one to get through, but completely worth the listen, anchored by a stunning script by Jade Madison Scott (Small Victories), and killer performance by Sophia Early. I’m always up for other creatives getting to play in the sandbox of someone else’s world, and am thrilled to see how all of the other contributors have chosen to add their spin to Faith McQuinn’s world. Can’t wait to be able to share the episode I wrote and directed with you all soon!

Damn. I don’t want to spoil the end of the most recent two-parter of this series, but KC Wayland and team hurt me on this one. The Adventure Scouts’ journey across Catalina has been heating up as the infection continues to spread. I just want to protect each and every one of these kids from what horrors they’ll be facing for the rest of the series. I wonder if any of them will be introduced in Descendants when it returns for season 2, like they did with the characters from Goldrush!

Another banner week here out in the empty wasteland of Whiskey’s world. It seems like things have gone sour with Harry, and as much as we don’t want to accept that, we do know that it’s important to keep moving forward. There are more theories swirling around the airwaves about how they’ve gotten here, and who maybe sent them there, and where to go to find more answers. The cliffhanger at the end of yesterday’s episode was another bombshell that pointed to a possible confrontation tomorrow… we’ll see if the world delivers, or if another wrench will be thrown into the works!

I’m halfway through the second installment of Bloody Disgusting and The George A. Romero Foundation’s collaboration, Ephemeris. This time takes the zombie outbreak up to the I.S.S. for some interstellar bloodshed. I’m really loving this new cast of characters from this run of scripts by Jeff Whitehead, especially considering there’s a cameo by the always incredible David Ault (The NoSleep Podcast, The Kingmaker Histories).

I’m caught up to this charming new sci-fi series after a recommendation from Faith McQuinn and already loving it! The scripts by Stephanie Elie are tight and engaging, with a stellar all around cast, and fantastic sound design by Xperience J (Harlem Queen, Past Due). Getting to meet the alien who’s crash landed on earth, and seeing how they react to the scientists around them, and slowly begin to model their form after them is fantastic. Plus, that scene of language first being formed? Fantastic!

While we don’t go back to Red Camp this week on the narrative front, Gideon Media has released the first bonus episode of season 2! In it, I have a conversation with Mac Rogers and Jordana Williams about what it was like for them to expand one of their original shows into a second season for the first time ever. This team is one of the most lauded in our medium, so it was incredibly interesting to hear from them about how this process treated them!

PS » If you’re in between seasons and would like to have someone interview you about your show to drop as a bonus episode on your feed, email me! I had such a great time on this one and I’d love to do more.

BONUS SNACK

Sam, Adam, and I went and caught this flick for $5 Wednesday at our local art-house cinema and absolutely loved it. While the ultimate twist was pretty well telegraphed, the three hander of Olivia Colman (The Favourite, Fleabag), Jessie Buckley (Fargo, I’m Thinking of Ending Things), and Anjana Vasan (We Are Lady Parts, Killing Eve) was infectious, and had us in stitches for the entire runtime. If you get a chance to catch this one while it’s still in theaters, I recommend it!

That’s all for me for this week! Hope y’all have a great rest of your day!
